‘Near-perfect’: How to Make the Most of Australia’s Bumper Wine Vintage

Australian wine lovers rejoice! After two challenging years marked by bushfires, drought, and low yields, Australian vineyards have bounced back with a record-breaking harvest—the largest in the nation's history.

New Era for Australian Wine

Wine Australia reported that nearly two million tonnes of grapes were crushed throughout Australian vineyards in 2021. South Australia led the way by generating more than half (52%) of the total yield. This is a remarkable 44% increase over the fire- and drought-affected 2020 vintage. Even Queensland's fledgling wine industry experienced tremendous growth, with a startling 112% increase in grape crush volume year over year.

But the good news does not end there. The 2020–2021 growing season was blessed with "near-perfect growing conditions across most states and regions," according to Wine Australia. This ideal combination of quantity and high quality means that the 2021 wines are not only tasty now but also have the potential to age nicely for years—some for up to five years. South Australia's McLaren Vale vineyards have seen a 44% rise in grape crush.

Tips for Savouring the 2021 Vintage

A well-stocked cellar allows those who enjoy drinking wines to enjoy the long-term rewards of their patience. With proper ageing, good wines can develop into something genuinely unique. Aged wines frequently have a more delicate structure, softer tannins, and an unexpected richness of flavours.

Now's the perfect moment to uncork a bottle or two of the 2021 vintage and savour its fresh, youthful character. And for those who appreciate the journey of wine, consider setting aside a few bottles to age, unlocking their full potential in the years to come.
